The climate of this region is typified by long hot summers followed by cold winters. The average rainfall is 300 mm to 380 mm, mainly falling between April and October.
The hills of the Southern Flinders Ranges surround the area forming a magnificent backdrop; and the colours are constantly varying with the seasons. The views we see from our farms include the beautiful Mount Remarkable , which makes up part of the Southern Flinders Ranges. The skies are blue and the air is clean, at night the stars are bright, the sounds you hear are often very far in the distance and the quiet makes you feel very peaceful. It is a lovely place to live and work.
The crops ripen naturally because of the plentiful sunshine and very few cloudy days. The region has no large towns or industrial developments, ensuring crops are grown in a very clean environment with no pollutants entering the food chain. All of these favourable environmental aspects enable us to consistently produce high quality wheat suitable for our superior flour and frozen dough bakery products, with minimal artificial inputs, due to our naturally fertile soil.
Although farming in a low rainfall region limits crop production and grain yields, the warmer days and cooler nights allow the production of high quality wheat with only minimal fertiliser.
The area is sparsely populated, with most farms being 2000 hectares (5000 acres) or larger. |
